Everything you should know about Project 1

Art Prize is the world’s largest art competition. The base of this mega event was led down 10 years back, where it was meant to be an experiment. It was a new concept, nothing like the world had ever seen.

Art Prize was started by Rick Devos who is an entrepreneur and investor. The project was a social experiment by him to see if artists and public can involve each other in a better way.

 What it turned out to be was a super energetic exhibition that was lauded by the entire world. The first ArtPrize took place in the year 2019 and it was open to anyone willing to submit their masterpiece.

 After 10 years of back to back success, we are once again looking forward to ArtProject 2019. Each fall, art enthusiasts from all over the country competes for a cash prize of $500,000. But, this time it comes with a twist in the form of Project 1.

 What is Project 1?

Project 1 by ArtPrize is the first exhibition in the series of various upcoming events. This mega art exhibition is all set to launch in September in Grand Rapides. The series will be all about a large scale of art shows both in downtown and outside it.

 Project 1 will be introduced as a commissioned exhibition which will look into the excellent work of 5 artists. The exhibition will begin on September 7 and will continue till Oct 27, 2019. If you are an art enthusiast, this is your chance to come across the country’s best art experiences. There will be seminars, events, theaters, and much more to witness at this art fair this year.

 How is it different from ArtPrize?

 Thousands of artists are associated with ArtPrize, fighting for the cash prize of $500,000. Of which the winner of $250,000 prize money is decided based on online vote and the other $250,000 is decided on the choice of the jury.

 On the contrary, Project 1 will be having just 5 competitors selected by the ArtPrize Artistic Director Kevin Buis and the members of the Curatorial Advisory Committee. These 5 selected artists will be changing the landscape of Grand Rapids with their excellent talent. The artworks will be displayed in multiple sites within the city. It will be interesting to see how lines are drawn between the public and private spaces.

 To give space to Project 1, ArtPrize has been put on a schedule of every alternate year. Which means one year you will be witnessing the ArtPrize and the other year Project1..11 during.

Who is on the Curatorial advisory committee?

·        Joseph Becherer (Director of the Snite Museum )

·        Dan Cameron ( Independent Curator)

·        Nicole J. Caruth, (Independent Curator and Writer)

·        Alice Gray Stites, (Museum Director of 21c Museum Hotels)

·  Larry Ossei-Mensah, (Senior Curator Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit)

·        Rebecca Carbin,(founder of I Heart Your Work Art Futures and ART + PUBLIC UnLtd)

Who are the participants of Project 1?

·        Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Rafael is a Mexican-Canadian artist who has even participated in the Venice Biennale. You will see a lot of lights, sound, and water vapor in his installations.

·        Amanda Browder

The master of fabric, Amanda is a Brooklyn-based artist. You will see her wrapping the building in the most extravagant colors of fabric.

·        Heather Hart

Another of Brooklyn based artist Heather Hart, who is all set to mesmerize downtown with submerged rooftops. Not to forget the spaces created by him will also be the performance space of Project 1 events.

·        Paul Amenta, Ted Lott

The duo will be creating open spaces for the public, where Project 1 event can take place. The team was also a part of ArtPrize 8 and currently working with Disability Arts Organisation.

·        Olalekan Jeyifous

Brooklyn has the genes for mega artists. Another of Brooklyn-based artist Olalekan Jeyifous will be seen in Project 1. He is famous for highlighting housing discrimination and equity issues in urban areas through his work. Let’s see what his sculptures are showcasing this time.

Where should I be to catch the best shows?

The masterpieces of Project 1 will be displayed in there different neighborhoods of Grand Rapids. Here is the siting times:

Downtown

In downtown, the show is open for 24*7, where you can visit the art work of Amanda, Heather, Olalekan, and Rafael.  The main pieces will be displayed in Rosa Parks Circle, and Blue Bridge.

Martin Luther King Jr. Park

Just a ten minutes’ walk from downtown, Martin Luther King Jr. Park will feature the art works of Amanada Browder and Heather Hart. The show will go on from 9.00 to 8.30 pm.

Tanglefoot Studio

Paul Amenta and Ted Lott will display their masterpieces in the Tanglefoot Studio from noon to 6.00pm.
